After reading “the Game of school”, I was shocked. Based on my experiences of learning in school, I could tell most schools in china are game of schools. I consider it as the biggest obstacle in Chinese education system. Out of my expectation, the problem in American is more serious than I think.
As the author stated “the idea of learning is treated as a mindless duty". Teachers pretend that they teach something and students pretend that they learn something. The task of teaching, to enlighten students and encourage them to think is passed from one hand to another just like a ball. No one involved want to take this responsibilities and change the situation because they know different voices will embrace strange eyesight. They avoid conflicts at the cost of missing the best opportunities to educate students to be a real person.
I am a Chinese student who has received Chinese education for nearly twenty years. Most Chinese students are good at predicting exams contents. Take TOFEL for an example. Some teachers paid great efforts to find a way to tell students how to find the right answer in reading section without reading the passage. Many Chinese students who have passed TOFEL with high scores can’t communicate in English. In this example, teachers are the accomplice for the trick and cheating. The result of the game of schools is very severe. As the author says, school life has great influences on students’ life. If students get used to answer questions with the same answer, like cakes made out from the same mode, they don’t understand the meaning of life. They get used to be the person who they are supposed to be and ignore their own voice from their hearts. I suffered from this dilemma too.
The cooperation of teachers, students, parents and administrators is the key to the problem. The author stated “waiting is a major part of playing the game of school”. I agree. I can change nobody but myself. As a future teacher, I should make my role clear. Though I have to meet the parents’ exceptions to help students get high grades, obey the rules teacher still enjoy some freedom and I can make a difference. Teachers, don’t be the person waiting on the bench, stand up, say something and do something.
